Contactless & Digital Wallet Setup

Contactless payments and digital wallets have transformed the way we pay for everyday purchases. Whether you're tapping your card at a terminal or using your phone to pay for coffee, these technologies make transactions faster and more convenient. This guide explains how contactless payments work, how to set up your card in a digital wallet, and answers common questions about security and usage.

What Are Contactless Payments?

Contactless payments allow you to pay by tapping your card or device on a compatible payment terminal, without inserting the card or entering your PIN. The technology uses Near Field Communication (NFC) to securely transmit your payment information over a very short range, typically less than 4 centimetres.

All of our debit and credit cards are issued with contactless capability enabled by default. You can identify a contactless-enabled card by the wave symbol printed on the front or back of the card. Most retail payment terminals now accept contactless payments, indicated by the same wave symbol displayed on the terminal screen or body.

Contactless Transaction Limits

Transaction Type Limit
Per-transaction contactless tap (card) $200 (default, adjustable up to $500)
Per-transaction contactless tap (digital wallet) No per-transaction limit when authenticated via device biometrics
Daily cumulative contactless (card) $1,000 before PIN verification is required

For card-based contactless payments, the terminal may periodically request your PIN for security purposes, even if the transaction is below the per-transaction limit. This is a standard security measure required by the card network. Digital wallet payments authenticated with biometrics such as Face ID or fingerprint are not subject to cumulative tap limits, as each transaction is individually verified.

Setting Up Apple Pay

Apple Pay allows you to add your debit or credit card to your iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac for secure contactless and online payments.

Requirements

  • iPhone 8 or later running iOS 16 or higher (for in-store contactless payments)
  • Apple Watch Series 3 or later (for wrist-based payments)
  • Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcode must be enabled
  • Card must be activated and in good standing

How to Add Your Card

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone
  2. Tap the "+" button in the upper right corner
  3. Select "Debit or Credit Card"
  4. Position your card within the camera frame to scan the card details automatically, or enter them manually
  5. Accept the terms and conditions
  6. Verify your identity — you will be prompted to complete verification via a one-time password sent by SMS, a call to our verification line, or through the mobile banking app
  7. Once verified, your card will appear in the Wallet app and is ready for use

To pay with Apple Pay in store, hold your iPhone near the payment terminal with your finger on Touch ID or glance at your screen for Face ID. You will feel a vibration and see a checkmark when the payment is complete.

Setting Up Google Pay

Google Pay (Google Wallet) allows Android users to make contactless payments in store, online, and in apps using their phone or compatible Wear OS smartwatch.

Requirements

  • Android device running Android 9.0 or later with NFC capability
  • Google Wallet app installed from the Google Play Store
  • Screen lock enabled (PIN, pattern, password, or biometric)
  • Card must be activated and in good standing

How to Add Your Card

  1. Open the Google Wallet app
  2. Tap "Add to Wallet" then select "Payment card"
  3. Scan your card using the camera or enter the details manually
  4. Accept the issuer terms and conditions
  5. Complete the verification step — this may involve an OTP sent to your registered mobile number or verification through the mobile banking app
  6. Your card is now added and ready for use

To pay in store, unlock your phone and hold it near the contactless terminal. No need to open the Google Wallet app — as long as NFC is enabled and your screen is unlocked, the default payment card will be used automatically.

Setting Up Samsung Pay

Samsung Pay is available on select Samsung Galaxy devices and offers both NFC and Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology, meaning it can work with both contactless terminals and older swipe-only terminals.

How to Add Your Card

  1. Open the Samsung Pay app (or Samsung Wallet on newer devices)
  2. Tap "Add Card"
  3. Scan your card or enter details manually
  4. Accept the terms and conditions
  5. Complete identity verification via OTP or mobile banking app
  6. Your card is ready to use

To pay, swipe up from the bottom of your screen (even from the lock screen), authenticate with your fingerprint or PIN, and hold the phone near the terminal.

Using Digital Wallets for Online Purchases

In addition to in-store payments, your digital wallet can be used for faster online checkout on websites and apps that accept Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay. When you see the relevant payment button during checkout, tap it to pay instantly using your saved card — no need to enter card details manually. This is not only more convenient but also more secure, as your actual card number is never shared with the merchant.

How Digital Wallets Protect Your Card

Digital wallets use a process called tokenisation to protect your payment information. When you add a card to your digital wallet, the actual card number is replaced with a unique device-specific token. This means:

  • Your real card number is never stored on your device or shared with merchants
  • Each transaction generates a one-time dynamic security code that cannot be reused
  • If your phone is lost or stolen, you can remotely suspend or remove cards through the wallet provider's website or app
  • Even if someone obtains your device, they cannot make payments without your biometric authentication or device passcode

Managing Your Digital Wallet Cards

You can manage your digital wallet cards through both the wallet app on your device and through our mobile banking app. The following actions are available:

  • Set a default card: Choose which card is used when you tap to pay without opening the wallet app
  • View recent transactions: See your last 10 wallet transactions directly in the wallet app
  • Suspend a card: Temporarily disable the card in your wallet without affecting the physical card
  • Remove a card: Delete the card from your wallet entirely. This does not cancel the physical card
  • Update card details: When your card is renewed with a new number or expiry date, the digital wallet card may update automatically. If not, remove the old entry and add the new card

Disabling Contactless Payments

If you prefer not to use contactless payments on your physical card, you can disable the contactless function through the mobile app or internet banking under "Card Controls." Digital wallet payments can be managed independently through the wallet app on your device. Note that disabling contactless on your physical card does not affect your digital wallet, and vice versa.
